The Cassville High School held its 35th annual Veterans Day Celebration last Friday in the gym. Each year, all veterans who attend are honored, but only one veteran is presented with a flag after the JROTC demonstrates the Thirteen Folds.
This year’s honoree was Ken Latcher. He was born on July 1, 1949, in Redwing, Minnesota, and moved to Manhattan, Kansas, when he was 8. He joined the Army in 1967 immediately after graduating high school and ended his service as an E-7, Sergeant First Class after serving from 1967 - 1974.
During his service, he remained stateside, serving as a chef cooking for over 2000 service members daily. He attended Kansas State University and married.
In 1986, he moved his family from St. Louis to Cassville in search of a better school for his children Greg and Justin, where he worked for Frito Lay for 25 years. In 2005, he married Bert, and all together, they have four sons.
He retired from Frito Lay, which only lasted three months, and began working for the City of Cassville, where he has been for over seven years.
You’ll find him on the sideline at Cassville football games on Friday nights, where he has kept stats since 2001. He also runs sound for “The Show” each fall and is a member of the Cassville Cruisers and the Masonic Lodge.
Students with the Beta Club, JAG, Speech and Debate, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes spoke during the celebration. Instrumental music was directed by Micah Boise and Alexander Clearbrook directed vocal music.
JROTC color guard were Cadet Major Dakotah Anderson, Cadet Sergeant Hannah Brizendine, Cadet Private First Class Melody Stephens and Cadet Malcolm Terry.
