April 19, 2017

This Saturday will mark the fifth annual Million March Against Child Abuse at the Barry County Judicial Center. Each year, the nationwide event raises awareness for tougher sentencing for child abuse and crimes against children in the United States.
The grass-roots movement has drawn additional marchers and more attention over the years, including annual participation from Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA). This year, SEK BACA will sell hot dogs on site and answer questions about their organization.
Million March Against Child Abuse coincides with April’s designation as Child Abuse Awareness Month. The free event will have signs for participants who don’t make their own. Drinking water is provided and everyone is asked to wear the recognized colors for the march of blue or white. Even those unable to walk are encouraged to attend and bring a chair to hold a sign.
Over the years, MMACA has grown to over 100 cities. The walks are sponsored by Children Without a Voice (CWAV), out of Atlanta, Goergia. Director Lin Seaborn stated, “Children are the world’s greatest natural resource and should be protected above all else on earth. We have to break the silence around the magnitude of crimes against out children, educate the masses, hold our lawmakers accountable for taking these crimes seriously, and keeping violent offenders in prison where they belong. We are asking everyone to join us in the streets in your city in April 2017.”
The Million March Against Child Abuse will be held on Saturday, April 22, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Barry County Judicial Center’s parking lot. For more information, see facebook.com/MMACAmarches or email leikeramy@yahoo.com.
