65th annual Wheaton BBQ brings fun for everyone
August 30, 2023
Fire pit crews smoked 1,500 chicken halves throughout the day.
The Current Classic Band was one of several bands that performed throughout the day. I enjoyed their gritty country rock set, including covers from Jimi Hendrix, Koe Wetzel and Sturgill Simpson. They also performed original music, one which lasted just under seven minutes. They will perform this Friday, September 1, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Monett Food Truck Friday event, sponsored by Schreiber, in Monett.

The 65th annual Wheaton BBQ was held last Saturday at Wheaton City Park.
The annual event the Wheaton Volunteer Fire Department sponsored always draws large crowds by bringing big-city fun to a small-town family atmosphere.
The event’s highlight is the chicken BBQ dinner priced at $7 for adults and $4 for children, including a 1/2 chicken, baked potato, baked beans, and milk. It’s no wonder it sells out every year, the chicken is always moist and smoked just right. This year volunteers served 1,500 chicken halves and 1,200 potatoes.
Wheaton Fire Chief Lindy Lombard said, “I know we could raise our prices and get more, but it brings a smile to my face to see so many enjoying it and I would rather run out of food every year than have leftovers.”
DUCK RACE RESULTS...
1st place, Jace Nelson, $500
2nd place, Mark Butra, $250
3rd place, Coby Holmes, $125
4th place, Lorna Stephens, $75
5th place, Jackie Wasson, $50
In celebration of the event’s 65th year, there was a special drawing for $65 for those present. That prize went to Cameron Grant.
The 66th annual Wheaton BBQ will be held August 24, 2024.
