$75K bond for suspect in Monett truck stop attack

             A Monett man is in custody after allegedly stealing fuel and attacking a fuel attendant at Herd’s Truck Stop and Convenience Store on Monday morning.
             According to a press release by the Monett Police Department, Matthew Elliott, 37, of Monett, went to the truck stop at 1100 South Lincoln Avenue around 9 a.m. The report indicated Elliott had stolen fuel and displayed an edged weapon to a fuel attendant. Officers state Elliott attacked the fuel attendance, causing injury, and then fled the scene. The victim had to be transported to an area hospital by ambulance for treatment and is in stable condition.
             The Missouri State Highway Patrol found Elliott’s vehicle at 9:09 a.m. about three miles outside of Monett at Farm Roads 2020 and 1100 in Barry County. The vehicle had crashed and was on fire when officers arrived. Elliott had fled on foot into a wooded area.
             Officers from the Patrol Monett Police Department, Missouri Department of Conservation, Barry County Sheriff’s Department and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department searched for the suspect. He was found around 35 minutes later.
Elliott was taken into custody by the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 9:50 a.m. on Monday, October 1. The Patrol listed charges pending as felony resisting arrest by fleeing in a vehicle, felony resisting arrest after committing a felony, felony leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash, felony no drivers license, a stop sign violation and no seat belt. The Patrol stated Elliott was turned over to the Monett Police Department on a robbery investigation.
             The Monett Police Department then took Elliott to the Monett Justice Center. In Barry County, Elliott is charged with robbery in the first degree, armed criminal action and assault in the third degree. Elliott is currently being held in the Barry County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 cash-only bond.
