With 7,787 ballots cast and all 17 Barry County precincts reporting by 8:45 p.m., election results were announced Tuesday night from the courthouse window for the most hotly contested local races.
The sheriff’s race drew much attention, with Detective Danny Boyd, of the Cassville Police Department, claiming final victory over his opponents, Travis Hilburn and incumbent Sheriff Gary Davis. Boyd claimed 38.89 percent of the vote; Hilburn, 34.81 percent; and Davis, 26.30 percent. All three candidates ran on the Republican ticket; Boyd will be unopposed in the general election on November 3.
Republican David Cole carried the night with Barry County voters for the District 29 state senate seat, but his opponent in the race, Mike Moon, ultimately won the seat with strong support coming from Lawrence County. In Barry County, Cole captured 3,639 votes to Moon’s 3,142.
In the race for Northern Commissioner of Barry County, Republican incumbent Gary Schad carried the night with 1,721 votes over Kyle Forgey’s 1,038, representing a margin of 24.76 percent. Schad will be unopposed in November.
On the Republican ticket for Southern Commissioner, Gene Robbins topped opponent Wade Hermansen by only 210 votes in the closest race of the evening. Robbins’ total of 1,949 votes represented only a margin of 5.7 percent over Hermansen’s 1,739 votes. Robbins will face Democrat Wayne Hendrix in the November election.
Barry County residents voted resoundingly against Amendment #2, with 2,234 votes for it and 5,388 votes against it, a margin of 41.38 percent. However, the amendment passed, statewide.
