Annual Volleyfest this weekend
September 20, 2017
Volleyfest 34 will be played at Southwest High School Saturday, Sept. 23 at Southwest High School in Washburn.
The event features 10 teams from Missouri and Arkansas and starts at 8:30 a.m. on two courts with two pools. The black pool consists of the host Lady Trojans of Southwest, Wheaton, Cassville, Berryville (Ark.) and Decatur (Ark.). The red pool is made up of teams from Huntsville (Ark.), Gentry (Ark.), Crane, Diamond and Verona.
"Anything that has lasted 34 years certainly has some history," said Coach Steve Voyak, who has organized the event for the last 15. "Coach Tilford started Volleyfest more than three decades ago and it has grown into one of the more competitive tournaments in the area and a border war of sorts."
The Huntsville Eagles are the defending champs. Decatur and Diamond are new to the field, replacing Farmington, Ark., and Pea Ridge, Ark.
Each team will play four matches in pool play. Following that, the 5th place team in each pool will be eliminated and the 4th-places teams will play for 7th and 3rd place teams will play for 5th. The top four teams will advance to championship play in the semifinals and finals. The top three teams will receive trophies and an MVP and all-tournament team will be selected by the coaches.
"It's difficult to choose a favorite," Voyak said. "Cassville had a great start to its season and Crane and Diamond always field strong teams. Huntsville will certainly want to repeat and Berryville always seems to be in the mix."
