At the River brings outdoor equipment for less
February 15, 2017
For Sam and Jenny Madsen and their two sons, their love of the outdoors is the main reason why they moved to Cassville. The beauty of Roaring River State Park, the forest and Table Rock Lake give them a place where they feel at home. As an extension of that, the couple opened a very specific kind of consignment shop to share that appreciation with the community.
The Madsens moved to the area and opened At the River Consignment, a shop dedicated to providing gear and accessories for outdoor hobbies, including camping, hiking, fishing and hunting. The couple opened their doors in the shopping center next to Pizza Hut in Cassville, and have exactly what people need for their outdoor adventures for a smaller dent in their budgets.
The Madsens are originally from the Carthage area and moved to Cassville from Diamond once their oldest son, Eli, was ready for kindergarten. Jenny said, “We really wanted him in a good school district, and I really love the park.” When they moved, they decided to pursue their dream.
Jenny continued, “Sam and I had a dream to do something we loved together, which still allowed us ample time to raise our family. This business was a leap of faith.”
The shop carries a huge selection of fly tying materials, as well as camping gear and fishing equipment, but they also offer items such as golf clubs, rock climbing equipment, rollerblades, pocket knives and more.
Jenny added, “There is always something new to find.” The couple deals in pocket knives such as Buck, Old Timer, Rough Rider and more, but do not carry guns or ammunition.
“We started seriously thinking about this in February 2016. We came home from fishing one Sunday afternoon at Roaring River and said, ‘Okay, let’s do this.’ We sold our house and small farm, Sam quit his job, and we just moved down here in June,” Jenny said.
She added, “We’re an ‘all-in’ kind of people.”
At the River opened in November 2016.
Perhaps the most intriguing part of the Madsens’ shop is how dedicated they are to the outdoors. Jenny said, “We love what we sell. Not just the items, but an opportunity to get outdoors and pursue new hobbies or adventures. We love that we can work together and that our whole family is involved in the business since even the kids come to work with us.”
The shop is definitely unique, with consignment opportunities in one place that fit a whole area of hobbyists. The Madsens knew they were one-of-a-kind when they opened, and hope that the love of the outdoors and dedication to their business keeps their doors open a long time, serving Cassville and Barry County.
The atmosphere is exactly what they were looking for when deciding where to raise their children and put down roots. Jenny said, “We’re so grateful for the support and encouragement we’ve received from the community. Word of mouth has been such a blessing in gaining our consignors and customers. We’ll strive to get a fair deal for our consignors and a fantastic bargain to our customers.”
At the River Consignment is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are closed Sunday through Tuesday. They are located at 44 Main Street in Cassville, next to Pizza Hut and two doors down from the laundromat.
