Barry County Veterinarian Service in Cassville hired a new veterinarian who started this week. Dr. Travis Pointer, DVM, is a Wheaton-native and joined the staff on June 1.
Pointer graduated from Wheaton high School in 2004 before going to Brigham Young University in Idaho. After earning his bachelors in animal science, he attended the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Pointer graduated in May before joining the staff.
When asked why they decided to hire Pointer, Dr. Cupps said, “Dr. Pointer grew up on his family’s dairy farm southeast of Wheaton. Our practice has supplied veterinary services for them for a long time. During that time, we saw Travis grow up and saw what an outstanding young man he developed into. We also saw the work ethic he has and know that he will be an outstanding veterinarian.”
Pointer feels that he will be a valuable addition to the staff by providing a fresh take on veterinary issues. He said, “Having recently graduated from school, I will bring a different perspective to issues affecting the local area.”
Barry County Veterinary Service offers a variety of services, including primary care, routine diagnostics and specialized reproductive services for cattle producers including heifer development and AI, embryo transfer and nutritional consultation.
The office has been in practice since 1957 when Dr. Eugene Mikeley began the clinic in his garage just west of the current clinic. Cupps joined in 1980 and the current location was built in 1995. Dr. Voyd Brown was hired on staff in 1996 and bought out Dr. Miekeley’s share in the practice when he retired in 2006. The other vet, Dr. Elizabeth Reed, joined the group after graduating from Auburn in 2010.
Dr. Cupps announced that with the addition of Dr. Pointer to the staff, he will be changing his schedule to four days a week.
Dr. Pointer is married to Tina, and together they have two children.
Barry County Veterinary Service is located at 1201 Old State Highway 39 in Cassville. For more information, call (417) 847-2677.
