Top Graduating Seniors at Southwest School were Valedictorian, Drucie Treadwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Treadwell of Seligman, and salutatorian, Marilyn Maddox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orby McNabb, of Washburn.
Major Damage From Heavy Rainfall A total of 5.34” of rainfall in a 24 hour period caused extensive damage in the area. Barry county SCS Supervisor Dwight Samuels estimated over $5,000 in damage resulted from the rainfall in the northwest sector of Cassville alone. Forest Products, Inc. was hit the hardest by high waters where damage was estimated in excess of $2,500.
Eric Adams participated in the State Speech Tournament at the University of Missouri - Columbia - where he reached the top rating, “Excellent”.
CHS Talent Show Winners were: first place, the band CSA with members Chris Barnes, Bruce Nickle, Mike Tichenor, Russ Melton and Larry Robinson; second place, The Allen Beeson Trio, Mike Lee, Bryant Ward, and Allen Beeson; third place, Mark Davis and Susan Carney for their skit.

Carr Cited by Navy for Exceptional Courage Jack O. Carr, Sr., Star Rt. Washburn, was cited for volunteering to transport an injured man by rubber raft in heavy seas and high prevailing winds. The citation concludes “Petty Officer Carr’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

County commission appoints three to Exeter school board The Barry County Commission appointed three Directors to the Exeter School Board on Thursday, April 27, 2000. John Marney, Melvin Lacey, and Kenny Stringer were all appointed to the board in this unusual case. Normally, vacancies on a school board can be filled by appointment by the remaining member of the board. However, when there are three vacancies at once, the appointments must be made by the County Commision.
CHS Junior-Senior prom king and queen Stivi Hoefler was crowned prom queen and Ty Phillips was presented prom king at Prom 2000, Cassville High School’s annual Junior-Senior prom.
Young shooter brings home turkeys DeJay Ragain, 10, of Jenkins, took home three turkeys from the Washburn Fire Department turkey shoot with his 12 gauge Mossberg 500 on Saturday, April 15, DeJay has only been shooting for two months. He is the son of Keith Ragain and Wayne and Bonnie Ragain of Jenkins.
Mano community club honors ‘street walkers’ Mano Community Club honored the Mano street walkers at their April 18 meeting for their participation in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Walk on April 8 at North Beach Park in Branson. The thirteen walkers raised more than $2,000 and were recognized as the largest team. The Mano Streetwalkers were Joy Scriven, Ealeanor Blovin, Judy Walker, Sue Kraft, Nancy Penfield, Paula Carroll, Eileen Panique, Robert Walker, Ralph Burnett, Richard Penfield, Bonnie Petereit, Lucy Hamilton and Paula Doleshal.
Rubie Cole, of Exeter High School, has been named a United States National Award Winner in Mathematics. She was nominated for this award by Mr. Culp, a teacher at Exeter High. Rubie is the daughter of Philip and Dee Ann Cole of Washburn.
Jeff Fletcher, of Golden, recently caught a record setting Striper. The fish weighed 64.5 pounds, was 51 inches long, and had a girth of 32 inches. The catch set more than one record. [At the time] It was the largest Striper ever caught in Arkansa. Also, Fletcher set a world record for the size of fish caught with a 12 pound test line.
