A boil water order is in effect in Barry County for customers of Southwest Rural Water District, which serves residents southwest of Cassville and Washburn.
According to Southwest Rural Water District manager, Raelene Taylor, The DNR-required boil order is the result of a main-break Wednesday, August 26, which allowed pressure to drop. The drop in pressure, in turn, could have allowed the build-up of bacteria in the water system.
"We began chlorinating and flushing water lines immediately after the break was repaired yesterday," Taylor said. "Today, we'll send water samples to the DNR. It takes 24 hours for the test results to come back. If the samples come back clear, we're hoping to be able to lift the boil order tomorrow afternoon (August 28)."
In the meantime, Taylor cautioned residents to continue boiling their water for at least one minute before using it - including filtered water - until the samples from DNR come back clear.
