Candidate for Barry County Sheriff, Travis Hilburn
July 22, 2020
1. Why are you running for sheriff?
I feel the sheriff’s office needs some change. The office needs someone who is willing to be out around the public and assist the deputies in their daily duties, as well as take care of the administrative section. I don’t make a lot of promises, but I will work as hard as I can to make the office what it should be.
2. What type of experience do you have that makes you a good candidate for this office?
• I’m a Barry County native.
•I have worked for the Highway Patrol for 14 years.
• I’ve served with the Marine Corps for 13 years.
•I’ve served with the Missouri National Guard for 8 years.
•I have three years experience in business management for a large automotive company.
3. The budget for the Sheriff's Office is the largest in the county. Do you feel it's adequate for current operations? Are there changes you would like to see made to it?
I am not aware of the current budget but I feel our Deputies and staff being fairly compensated for good work should be top priority. Many of our law enforcement officers and staff live below the poverty level and work secondary jobs to supplement their families.
4. It's essential to have a good relationship with other law departments. Are there areas in the relationship between other municipalities, the Conservation Department and the Highway Patrol that could be improved? If so, how would you improve them?
I have and will continue to work with all other Law Enforcement agencies. We all do the same job and should work side by side.
