Candidate Wayne Hendrix (D) , Southern Commissioner
July 29, 2020
What do you think is the biggest concern Barry County faces, and how would you fix it?
Drugs continue to be a problem in Barry County and a majority of arrests are drug related offenses. While serving as Southern Commissioner, I along with the other commissioners implemented the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), in an effort to combat the opioid crisis. The commission is actively working with law enforcement to improve this situation. If re-elected, I will continue to work with the county commission along with local law enforcement to do everything possible to improve this issue.
What is your opinion of the present budget and what changes, if any, would you make if (re)elected?
Every January the commission approves a balanced budget. Each office holder submits his or her proposed budget to the commission. We meet with each office holder and go through his or her proposal. If we feel something needs cut, we discuss it at that time. Each office holder is directly involved in their budget. I believe the Barry County Commission has spent taxpayer’s money wisely and conservatively, building a reserve, while maintaining bridges and buildings and taking care of employees. I believe our current budgeting process has served us well.
If (re)elected, how will you be sure you’re hearing the concerns of all demographics of Barry County citizens?
I believe it is important to be accessible to residents who have concerns or questions. I am always available either by phone or in person. I welcome face-to-face conversations and phone calls, because they lend themselves to better understanding and communication. A listening ear and open communication are important parts of being a public servant.
What changes, if any, would you make to the office?
None
What is your plan for your first 90 days in office, if (re)elected?
My plan is to continue to serve the tax payers of Barry County in a fair, honest and conservative manner.
