Since the early 1940s, the Cassville Alumni Association made it their mission to keep the graduates of Cassville School District in touch with one another. On Saturday, May 25, the Cassville Alumni Association plans to keep the spirit alive by hosting their annual banquet which will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the formation of the school district.
“It has been an ongoing event at the end of school for a lot of years,” said Carolyn Bowen, president of the alumni association. “There was a period of time where it was one of the biggest social events in town. Through the years, it’s diminished because more and more of our graduates don’t stay in town.”
Bowen added that standard attendance of the event usually numbers just over one hundred.
Several events are scheduled to take place during the banquet: the alumni association will elect new officers, take care of new business, and a representative from the administration of Cassville Schools will deliver a speech about district news from the last year.
The Cassville Alumni Association will also use the time to hand out their annual scholarships to Cassville graduates selected by the association's scholarship counsel.
“This past year, we were lucky enough to make a little more money than usual, so we’ll be able to give out four scholarships to Cassville graduates,” said Bowen.
In the past, the event included a public speaker of some kind. According to Bowen, that aspect of the event was removed in order to keep the focus on bringing alumni from different generations together to speak with one another.
“We’ve found in the last few years that people just want to sit and visit,” said Bowen.
Bowen added that, in her view, the event is about more than just networking, it’s about a sense of togetherness stretching across generations.
“The neat thing about the [Cassville Alumni Association] is that it’s not just one graduating class,” said Bowen. “You have a chance to speak to graduates from many different generations.”
The event opens at 4:30 p.m., on May 25, for registration and admittance. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Admission to the banquet is $15 per person at the door with the funds collected used to fund the alumni scholarships for next year. The banquet will be held in the Cassville High School commons area.
