The first stair climb to support the mission of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was held September 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high rise building in downtown Denver, Colorado, to climb 110 flights of stairs in memory of their fallen FDNY brothers who were killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
Since its beginning, the Denver 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb has evolved into a much anticipated annual event replicated in cities across the nation.
The 10th Annual 9/11 Springfield Area Memorial Stair Climb is set for Saturday, September 17, at Missouri State University Plaster Stadium. The Memorial Stair Climb is a commemorative climb to honor the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York, who died on September 11, 2001.
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m., with firefighter and civilian participants climbing the stairs of the stadium multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers.
Cassville Fire Protection District Firefighters Kristin Schoester, Michael Correia, and Devin Smith, under the direction of Training Officer and Cassville Climb Team Captain Travis Littler, will participate in this year's climb.
"The Cassville Fire Department is proud and honored to participate in the 9/11 Springfield Area Stair Climb in remembrance of the tragic 9/11 attacks," said Captain Littler.
As part of registration participants are asked to raise funds for the NFFF. Last year, registered climbers raised over $40,000 for the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation. All registration fees and fundraising will be directed to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to fund the programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.
Representatives with the Cassville Fire Protection District were recognized earlier this year for raising the most money for NFFF. To date, they have raised $1,610.00, which is 81% of their total goal of $2,000.00.
