Last week, on Wednesday, April 3, Cassville High school hosted their first home tournament of the 2019 golf season, the Cassville Invitational. The tournament was held at the Cassville Golf Club with lunch provided by Arvest Bank of Cassville.
The varsity tournament included 60 golfers from 12 different schools playing individual rounds on the course’s 18 holes.
Cassville golf coach Jay Rogers is happy with his team’s performance at their first home tournament of the year. Though this year’s team doesn’t have the experience of past teams, Rogers is proud of their strong effort.
“Overall, we finished in third place,” said Rogers. “We did that with a pretty young and inexperienced team, so I thought that was a pretty good finish for us.”
Cassville had six players enter the tournament. Individually, two Cassville players finished in the top ten, with a third finishing in the top 25. Dylan McCormack finished in sixth and Shannon Haney finished in ninth. Ryan Wilson, a freshman playing his first ever individual tournament round, finished 22nd.
According to Rogers, the team’s season began poorly with the temperamental March weather leaving their course muddy and unusable.
“We got off to a rough start due to the weather,” said Rogers. “It was one of the most frustrating starts that we’ve had since I’ve been coaching golf. We had a lot of indoor practices initially.”
Rogers went on to explain that later in the month, once the rains let up and the team was able to practice on the golf course, they eventually found their feet.
“Once we got out on the course, we split our time up between days where we would do drill work. We’d be on the range, chipping and putting,” said Rogers. “Other times, I’d send them out on the course and just let them play nine holes and just recording the scores so I could know how to rank them when we do go into tournaments.”
Rogers is unsure how is team will perform in the coming month, due mostly to their lack of experience, but their results on the course in this tournament gives him hope.
“Time will tell,” said Rogers. “As I said before, I’ve got a pretty inexperienced group as far as competitive golf and tournament golf goes at least. If we can continue to shoot the scores that we did at our tournament, especially Dillion and Shannon, I think we have a pretty good chance of at least getting out of districts this year.”
The golf coach went on to explain that due to the nature of the game, both physical and mental aspects can affect player perfomance.
“You never know, one bad day can really ruin it for you, or you could get on a good run and go all the way to the state tournament,” said Rogers. “Golf is a weird game in that way.”
The Cassville varsity golf team will play again next week on Monday, April 15, in a tournament at Carthage. The tournament starts at 8:30 a.m.
