February 8, 2017 Charlea Estes A Cassville man was arrested for assaulting two women with no explanation, according to an affidavit of probable cause by the Cassville Police Department. James A. Smith, 33, of Cassville, was charged with two counts of domestic assault in the second degree. According to the report by officer Jonathan Cherney, he responded to a domestic assault call on Hickory Street in Cassville on Friday, February 3. The victim had a swollen nose and blood on her clothing and coming out of her nose when the officer arrived. The victim told officer Cherney that Smith was her nephew and he was breaking things in his room. She said when she asked what was wrong, he struck her with a closed fist in her face and body. The victim stated he followed her into the living room, still punching her. Smith’s girlfriend was also in the residence at the time and said she saw him assaulting his aunt. She told officers when she walked in, Smith began hitting her, as well. His girlfriend claimed she laid face down to protect herself and that Smith was stomping on her and kicking her. Smith’s girlfriend was able to run to a neighbor’s for help when he began assaulting his aunt again. Both victims told officers they did not know why he was destroying the house or beating them, according to the report. Smith is currently in the Barry County jail being held on a $20,000 bond.
