The Cassville Women’s Golf Association’s competitive season is in full-swing. The association is made up of Cassville locals who meet on a regular basis at the Cassville Golf Course to play against one another in competitive events.
On May 16, the association reported favorable weather and hosted a competition for the lowest gross and net score. In golf, gross scores are determined by how many strokes a player takes to move the ball into the hole, while the net is that number subtracted by the player’s handicap.
First, second and third place winners were named for players in both categories. For lowest gross score: first place - Lynn Blanke; second place - Karry Lewis; and third place - Doris Connor. Winners of the lowest net score: first place - Deb York; second place - Cheryl Ludwig; and third place - Janie Watson.
Deb York received a payout for the lowest number of putts. Birdies, a scoring term used to denote a number of strokes that are one less than the expected number on a given hole were scored by York on holes one and 14 and Janie Watson on hole three.
On May 30, the association hosted a competition wherein the winner was the player with the lowest number of putts. Deb York and Jeanette Skorpski tied for first place in this competition with Karry Lewis in third. Susie Jacobs was recognized for landing a shot closest to the pin on hole 11. Chip-ins, or short shots intended to only move the ball on to the green that end up sinking the hole, were scored by Doris Connor, Susie Jacobs and Barb Vesley.
Most recently, on June 13, the association hosted a scramble event. A golf scramble is tournament structure that emphasises fun over the pressures of individual score keeping. In this format, golfers form teams of two or more and all players shoot a tee shot with the team playing through with the ball that went the farthest.
Winners of this event include: first place - Janie Watson, Kay Haupert and Debbie Yarnall; second place - Lynn Blanke, Susie Jacobs and Sue King; and third place - Doris Connor, Ann Loepkke, and Connie Figgins.
