Citizens young and old gathered at the Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center at Roaring River State Park last Saturday to celebrate the earth.
Earth Day, which is celebrated every year on April 22, is a time for citizens worldwide to celebrate our home planet and show gratitude for what it provides.
During the annual celebration at the state park, members of the Missouri Department of Conservation handed out tree saplings. Visitors were also treated with snow cones, games, were able to meet Smokey the Bear and encouraged to write letters to the Earth. One visitor wrote, “Thank you for the sun that wakes me up, thank you for your beauty, the flowers, bees, breeze, color and scent. You are beautiful.”
Though collectively we celebrate the Earth once a year, there are several ways you can celebrate our planet everyday:
• Following the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) will save natural resources, money, and waste sent to landfills.
• Conserve energy by turning off lights, unplugging or investing in energy efficient appliances, and switching to LED bulbs.
• Reduce plastic use by not using plastic straws, using a reusable water bottle, and utilize reusable shopping bags at the grocery store.
• Plant native trees and plants for biodiversity.
• Shop and buy local. When you shop and buy local, it reduces the amount of emissions produced.
• Take a walk and pick up trash along the way.
