County 2021 Budget Hearing Scheduled

January 20, 2021
Sheila Harris
The 2021 proposed budget for Barry County totals $5,514,831.63, up from last year’s approved budget of $4,914,979.56. Of the 2020 approved budget, $4,515,526 was actually used.
Presiding Commissioner Gary Youngblood attributes this year’s increase in the proposed budget to a jump in the amount of sales tax revenue generated in 2020, which, in turn, he attributes to the fact that more people shopped locally due to COVID-19.
According to Barry County Treasurer Lois Lowe, Barry County received $5,278,070.90 in sales tax revenue in 2020, up over 9 percent from 2019’s total tax revenue of $4,830,332.
“Part of the revenue increase will be set aside in a reserve fund,” Youngblood said. “We’re also proposing raises for county employees and the purchase of four new vehicles and computer and radio equipment for law enforcement.”
The Barry County 2021 budget hearing will take place in the courtroom at the Barry County courthouse Thursday, January 21, at 9 a.m.
