County Commission holds 2023 budget hearing

The Barry County Commission held its 2023 budget hearing on Thursday, January 19. Those present during the hearing were Presiding Commissioner Steve Blankenship, Northern Commissioner Gary Schad, Southern Commissioner Gene Roberts, County Clerk Joyce Ennis, Deputy Clerk Kimi Deal, Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd, Barry County Treasurer Gretta Tripp, Recorder of Deeds Danielle Still, County Collector Skyler Bowman, Public Administrator Sam Madsen, and Barry County Assessor Sherry Smith.
The Barry County Commission proposed a budget of $5,607,607.44 for 2023 with an estimated revenue projection of $5,710,275.00 plus $2,981,466.43 carried over from 2022, giving a total appropriation of $8,691,741.43. The estimated revenue breakdown is $4,100,000.00 in sales tax, $825,775.00 in fees for service, and $784,500.00 in other revenues.
The commission approved an 8% COLA for county employees and a 2% COLA for office holders.
With the passing of the 1/2 cent Law Enforcement Tax Sheriff and Jail, costs are no longer taken from the general revenue funds. The Barry County Commission proposes a budget of $2,739,170.00 for 2023 with an estimated revenue projection of $2,752,500.00, plus $213,370.80 carried over from 2022, giving a total appropriation of $2,965,870.80.
According to County Commission Clerk Joyce Ennis, some funds from the capital projects, which is the largest approved allocation with $2,010,000.00 of the general revenue, will be used to make repairs to the Recorders office and the Extension office from water damage sustained last year and to fix lighting in the south hall of the Courthouse.
The prosecuting attorney's office will see an appropriation increase this year, with an approved budget of $494,735.67. According to Ennis, additional funding for the prosecutor's office will be used to add an assistant prosecuting attorney.
