For the first time in recent memory, Barry County will have a horticulture fair for county residents to show off their produce, flowers and canned goods. The fair is slated for Saturday, September 6, in conjunction with the Farmers’ Market on the Square in Cassville and is to run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. with entry check-in from 6:30 a.m. until 9 a.m.
The Horticulture Fair is sponsored by the Cassville Main Street Association and the Garden Sass Farmers’ Market Association. Along with judging in various categories, there will also be music during the event beginning at 11 a.m. with the Possum Holler Fiddlers and Ozark Mountain Revival at 1 p.m., a dunk tank, a watermelon seed spitting contest at 10 a.m. and more.
This year’s produce and goods will be judged in a variety of categories, but all items must be grown, made or gathered in Barry County to qualify. The contest is open to all Barry County residents and Garden Sass Farmers’ Market Association members in good standing.
Categories for judging will be produce, cut herbs, cut flowers and foliage. In the canning judging, categories are jams, jellies, pickles, salsa and other. There will also be a competition for honey, eggs, cut flower arrangements, dry arrangements and mixed arrangements. Mixed arrangements can be a mix of flowers, produce and canned goods.
Ribbons will be awarded in each category with best of show and reserve best of show rosettes also up for grabs.
The whole day is being put together to promote the farming and gardening community in Barry County while also supporting the local FFA and 4-H chapters. The Horticulture Fair is sure to bring the old timey fun of days past to the Cassville square on Saturday.
All proceeds raised from the fair will go to local FFAs and 4-H programs. For more information about the event, see the Garden Sass Facebook page or call (501) 317-9065. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair.
