On March 5, 2013, a new club was born. Founders Kara Fletcher and Jessie Rex started the Lego Club with the backing of the Eagle Rock Community Association and the Eagle Rock Friends of the Library. The first meeting had 13 kids ages 4-14. While a small start, it only stayed that way for a short time. By the end of the first year, we had over 20 kids.
Saturday, March 18, 2023, was a day that has been in the making for ten years. Little did we know that when we started the Eagle Rock Lego Club that it would still be going strong as ever. What started small has turned into over 30 regular kids that get to enjoy the creativity and interactions with other, equally creative minds.
We were excited to see that we had ten of our original kids come back to help make the day even more special for local Lego legend Kara Fletcher. There was even a second-generation family for the day. Like all Lego Club days, we started the day with free play with all sizes and colors of bricks. Then we moved on to the fun of circle time, which had a special slideshow documenting the past ten years. The videos show some of the builds done throughout the years, including Lego race cars and made ducks, cows, giraffes, elephants, superheroes, pumpkins, and many more. We then split the 30+ kids into two groups; the first group enjoyed a snack and the exhibit of newsletters, pictures, and the builds shown on tables, while the second group built with Kara, Jessie, and her fellow ARK-LUG Group. After everyone built their maze, we settled down for cake, crowns for our Lego Queens, laughter, and pictures of all the children with our Lego ladies. The day was a joint effort from Kara Fletcher, Jessie Rex, The Eagle Rock Library, and the Eagle Rock Community Association, and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. These two women have had many successes throughout the years, but depending on which person you ask depends on what it is. Both founders agree however the success and happiness they brought into this small community with Legos is their biggest success. With the number of smiles and kids asking their parents to come back, there is no doubt that this club will be around for another ten years.
Mrs. Fletcher has partnered with the Eagle Rock Library on many occasions to create a place of learning and creativity. She has also participated in Summer Reading Programs for the Libraries of Barry and Lawrence.
