Freedom Bank of Southern Missouri has confirmed that one of their data vendors, American Bank Systems (ABS), was victimized by a cyber-criminal where certain systems of ABS were infected with malware, resulting in a data breach. Although Freedom Bank of Southern Missouri has no evidence of identity theft or fraud as a result of this incident, they have proactively increased security on all existing accounts through heightened monitoring and extra verification steps for their valued customers.
Immediately after receiving notice on October 30 from ABS, they began the process of working around the clock to get customer notices out through ABS as quickly and completely as possible. ABS has attempted to send the notice letter to all customers affected by the breach.
"At Freedom Bank, we care deeply about our customers and continue to prioritize protecting their personal information," said president, Stan Kelley. "We have invested in experienced staff and have a forward-facing approach to keep customers safe by offering many checking accounts with features that enhance monitoring and security. We acknowledge that threats grow more sophisticated each day and will continue to focus on safeguarding customer information.
"Freedom Bank is appreciative of our customers and will provide updates on our website as more information becomes available about the ABS data breach."
