Cassville Intermediate Fifth Grade student, Allyson Going, took first place in the school’s spelling bee for the second year in a row in the contest held Friday in the intermediate school’s library.
Also for the second year, Going was unable to move on to meet broader competition in The Joplin Globe’s Spelling Bee. The Globe opted to cancel its annual spelling bee again this year due to COVID-19 concerns.
Cassville Intermediate School faced challenges with its own spelling bee as a result of COVID-19.
“We usually have two winners from each of our 12 fourth, fifth and sixth grade classrooms participate in the spelling bee,” Swadley said, “but this year, because of spacing concerns, we were only able to let the top winner from each classroom participate, which narrowed the field of participants to 12.”
As the field was narrowed, the final round of competition was intense for first place winner Going, and second place finalist, Cassie DeLeon, who conceded after misspelling debtor. Going, too, spelled debtor incorrectly, but was able to spell the following word, faucet, correctly to take first place.
The Cassville Intermediate School Spelling Bee is organized by librarian Misty Hunter and judged by a panel of teachers.
