Guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting
April 9, 2020
• Wear disposable gloves to clean and disinfect.
• Clean surfaces using soap and water. Practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces.
Examples of high tough surfaces include: tables, doorknobs, light switches, counter tops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, remotes, toilets, faucets, sinks, etc.
• Clean the area or item with soap and water or another detergent if it is dirty. Then use a household disinfectant that is an EPA-registered household disinfectant that is recommended for use against SARS-Cov2. These can be found at: https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2.
• Many products recommend keeping the surface wet for a period of time (see product label for full instructions).
• When cleaning, wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60% alcohol may be used.
• Diluted household bleach solutions may also be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow the manufacture’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner.
To make bleach solution, mix:
5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water.
Alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol may also be used to disinfect surfaces.
• For soft surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, clean the surface using soap and water or with cleaners appropriate for use on these surfaces.
• Launder items (if possible) according to manufacture’s instructions using the warmest appropriate water setting and dry items completely.
• You may also use an approved disinfectant recommended for use against Sars-Cov2. For additional guidance, please visit cdc.gov/coronavirus or reach out to us at the Barry County Health Department at (417) 847-2114.
