For an added dose of holiday cheer and fun, eight Cassville businesses are hosting a scavenger hunt on Thursday and staying open late to help last minute shoppers.
Charli Jo Epperly organized the event on behalf of Tomblin's and invited other businesses to participate. She said, "I was thinking about things they used to do around the square when I was little. They would stay open late. Mom would always do that. But I thought we should make it fun for people. I thought we could have a scavenger hunt in the store, but then I thought if we had more people involved, it would be better. So I did a Google search and found a resource that a community posted for an event for Small Business Saturday. It was a little different, but it was a scavenger hunt."
Epperly invited other businesses and formed a plan to have a scavenger hunt that included after hours shopping to help those who work during the day. It was a win-win in Epperly's opinion and other business owners agreed and joined in on the fun.
The premise is that shoppers can visit businesses during participation hours on Thursday afternoon and into the evening and look for clues. Each business will have a sheet with a clue as well as sheets for participants to pick up and collect answers on. Epperly said the clue could be a riddle or a question. The participants will search the store for the answer and then confirm their answers with an employee.
Participants are encouraged to find clues at any or all of the stores participating. For each correct answer, shoppers will have an entry into the drawing for a large prize package full of goodies from each business participating.
Epperly said, "I thought if we had a hint and a prize in the pot at each store, the more prizes in the pot, the more people would get out and participate."
Eight businesses donated a $10 to $20 item or more to the prize package and agreed to host the scavenger hunters in their shops.
The businesses participating and the times they will be open for the hunt are:
At the River Consignment, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Carey's Cassville Florist, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Designs by Debbie, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Forever Yours Embroidery, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Sports World 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Little Shop Children's Resale, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m
Tomblin's Jewelry, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Whitley Pharmacy, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Epperly said that she thinks the event will help shoppers and businesses alike. She said, "They'll come find the clue and then go through the store and look for the answers. Open houses are great because it gets people in the store, but we are trying to get individuals in the store to really look at inventory. It's so busy during open houses that it's hard to even see the items in the store, because it's so crowded."
Those participating in the scavenger hunt can get eight entries from visiting stores on Thursday, December 19. However, they can also get an additional eight entries by taking a picture at each store they visit, posting it on Facebook and tagging the store and the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce. Each store will submit the names of those who tag them on social media for extra entries. In all, each participant can have 16 entries in the drawing.
Once participants are done, they just leave their form at their last stop. The winner of the grand prize will be drawn on Saturday, December 21, through a Facebook live drawing done by Tomblin's.
Epperly said she is excited about the event and hopes it draws business to local shops for last minute gifts. The extended hours are to offer that opportunity to everyone. She said, "We wanted to make sure people who get off work at 5 and give them the opportunity to come shop in town."
