This weekend marks the annual spring Kids’ Fishing Day at Roaring River State Park. Hatchery officials worked tirelessly to restore the upper part of the stream so that the event could go on as scheduled, and enough trout will be stocked for 1,000 kids this Saturday, May 20.
Paul Spurgeon, Roaring River State Park Hatchery manager, said, “We focused on the upper end of the river to get it ready on time. We completed that for the most part.” He added that the weekend forecast might mean a lighter turn out for the event, but everything will still go on as initially planned.
This year’s events include fish cleaning, fish cooking, Dutch oven cooking, taxidermy, fly fishing and more. The family event is geared to include classes on a variety of subjects to keep patrons of all ages and interests involved. Kids attending at least three classes throughout the day on Saturday will be entered into a drawing held at 5 p.m. for prizes. Classes are open to children and adults, but prizes are reserved for children only.
Tags are free for children ages 15 and under and will be available all day Friday at the Hatchery Office. Tags will be available at the tent beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday and fishing will be from 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Spurgeon added that they are still looking for volunteers to help with the event. To volunteer, call the hatchery at (417) 847-2430 or just show up Saturday.
