Kids should be packing up their tackle boxes and readying their poles for the fall Kids’ Fishing Day event at Roaring River State Park this Saturday, August 20. Roaring River Hatchery manager Paul Spurgeon said they are anticipating between 800-900 tags handed out to kids for the all-day event.
Kids’ Fishing Day is sponsored by the Missouri Conservation Department and is held at various parks across the state. Saturday will be the second kids fishing event of the year, with an earlier free day in May annually.
Spurgeon said his staff are stocking the waters with around 2,500 trout for Saturday’s festivities beginning Friday evening. Staff also continue to stock various holes throughout the day.
Whether kids are trout fishing pros or have never held a rod and reel, Roaring River Kids’ Fishing Day is an ideal time to get out on the river. Volunteers available will help any skill level to make sure kids enjoy their time at the park. There are also options for kids who aren’t anglers. Various classes and events are held throughout the day to make the event fun for the whole family, regardless of interests.
Kids ages 15 and under can show up the day of the event to get their tags at the volunteer tent beginning at 6:30 a.m. Alternately, tags are also available for pick up the day before at the hatchery office until 9 p.m. Friday. Fishing will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday and run until 8 p.m.
