Wheaton senior Rachel Lacey finished her track career in style last weekend earning two medals at the MSHSAA Class 1 Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City. Lacey finished fifth in the high jump on Friday clearing the bar at 5-0. Then, on Saturday, she claimed another fifth place medal in the 100 meter dash finishing in 12.70.
Along with her two medals, Lacey added two more school records to her resume. She already held Wheaton records for the long jump (17-03) and the 200 meter dash (26.9).
Wheaton’s Monica Hirojosa finished 15th in the C1 Girls Shot throwing 29-09.
Scannell 7th in C2 Boys 110 Hurdles
John Scannell became the first Southwest boy to earn an All State medal in the high hurdle event claiming seventh place on Saturday at the MSHSAA Class 2 Track and Field Championships.
Besides making the awards podium, Scannell posted a big PR, running 15.76. It was the first time he had broken the 16-second barrier.
Just getting to the final of a state sprint event is nerve wracking. The 16 qualifiers from the four sectional meets compete in two seeded semifinal heats. Only the heat winners and the next six best times advance to the finals. With the top eight places earning All State medals, the pressure to perform in the semis is intense. Once you reach the finals, all you have to do is finish legally to medal.
But the Southwest sophomore wasn’t content to just medal. Running out of lane eight, Scannell exploded out of the blocks and attacked every hurdle with unbridled aggression. That 15.76 moves him into second place on the All Time Trojan List trailing only school record holder Adam Finuf’s 15.35 from 2000.
Both Southwest’s Brylee Wilson and Trevor Sneed bowed out in the Class 2 400 meter preliminaries. Then the Southwest boys 4x800 meter relay team of Sneed, Christian Long, Xander Deshields and Travis Sickles placed 12th in 8:49.41.
