Lady Wildcats win district opener over Mac, 53-37

February 28, 2018
Lee Stubblefield

The Lady Wildcats took their first step toward a district championship with a 53-37 win over McDonald
County in the first round of the Class 4 District 10 tournament at Cassville on Monday night. Madi Stokes recorded a game-high 16 points to lead the Ladycats to victory.
Cassville had a hard time putting this game away. After posting a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats could not widen the gap against the Lady Mustangs. Mac County, with a paltry win total during the regular season, played with skill and intensity that belied their record.
Don’t forget that Cassville barely squeaked past McDonald County on January 8 in a 40-37 nailbiter.
Cassville took an 11-point lead into halftime, but McDonald County chipped away and pulled within 33-26 on a Kristen Penn basket with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. Hallie Long scored with a sweet interior pass from Ashlynn Howe to give Cassville a 35-26 lead at the final break.
In the fourth quarter, the Mac shooters let it rip. The Lady Mustangs posted 11 points in four minutes to cut Cassville’s  lead to 41-37 when Meagan Mills drained a long three. But Mills, Mac’s leading scorer, fouled out on the inbounds play following her long bomb.
The Lady Wildcats met the challenge. One of the consistent trademarks of a Chris Shore team is defense. With the game very much in doubt, Cassville held McDonald County scoreless for the final 4:03. The Lady Mustangs could not score from the field, and couldn’t even earn a chance at the line.
The Lady Cats offense poured in the final 12 points of the contest, eight of them free throws. The senior-laden Cassville lineup was deadly from the line, hitting six in a row to finish off McDonald County.
Cassville improved to 23-4 and earned a semifinal berth against Webb City on Thursday.
Cassville scorers; Madi Stokes, 16; Hallie Long, 10; Madry McCrackin, 10; Lauren Turner, 7; Ashlynn Howe, 5; Audra Brooks, 3; and Alondra Miller, 2.
