Letter to the Editor: Recent Purdy vandalism

October 3, 2018
Last week, the Purdy community was struck by vandalism from what appears to be two young men. As someone who lives in the Purdy community and a student who attends Purdy High School, I found the vandalism on our town to be very disrespectful. Within the vandalism of the Purdy community was the defacing of the Purdy R-II School District with profanity intended to tell the staff and students to off themselves.
Being a student in this school district since 2010, I have seen nothing but support from fellow students and the staff. Our student body consists of several different groups with different interests, but nonetheless we are always supportive of one another. Along with that, our teachers and counselor push us to become the best versions of ourselves to eventually reach our fullest potential. Members of our janitorial staff are equally as friendly by greeting us with smiles or even asking how we are on occasion.
As a student who sees a different side of things than teachers, I don’t consider our student body to have extreme amounts of bullying for someone to lash out in such a way. Even with the few, typical troublemakers, it seems a bit outlandish for someone to disrespect our community.
Not only was the vandalism of our school disrespectful but the vandalism of the First Baptist Church of Purdy, the Fire Department, the Farm Center, and the City Park are equally disrespectful. Our community is considered Christian with several churches in such a small town, our school even offers a Christian based organization for students and staff members. Our community is involved with the Fire Department as several of our students volunteer there. With a lot of farmers in our community, the Farm Center is an active business. Along with that, the vandalism to the farm center attacked our city police department. Last, the City Park is a popular part of town where kids and parents go for an evening activity. The vandalisms on the Purdy community not only affected our school, but a larger part of our community.
Despite the slight humor found within the vandalism with misspelt words and messing up “420,” the vandalism of the Purdy community was a huge slap in the face.
              - Bayleigh Schad, Purdy student
