Two local fueling stations help local students and families during trying times.
The Stage Stop in Butterfield and Trojan P.Q. Mart in Washburn are both on a mission to help local students, as well as their families, during the trying times after the cancellation of schools in Barry County due to COVID-19.
Darrell Mathis has owned Stage Stop in Butterfield since 2011.
“We are offering students a free breakfast and lunch meal to help feed students, so the parents have one less thing to worry about. We are doing it as a way to thank the local community for supporting our business since we opened. It’s a way to pay it forward,” said Mathis.
"Kids are important and we are feeding them so none go hungry during school closings,” said Kim Hernandez, cashier at Stage Stop. “We are working hard and sanitizing every hour to make sure we have a clean environment.”
Stage Stop is offering free lunches and breakfast Monday through Friday. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and includes a breakfast sandwich, plus juice or milk. Lunch is available from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m., and includes a sandwich, chips and a juice or small fountain drink.
There is a donation jar by the register to help pay it forward. The Stage Stop is located 9429 State Highway W in Butterfield. Business hours Monday through Thursday are 4 a.m. - 10 p.m. and Friday 6 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Robert and Leta Shockley, owners of Trojan P.Q. Mart in Washburn for the past eight years, are also providing food to students after a few community members came together to make sure no student or kid went hungry during the cancellation of schools.
"We have an awesome community. It’s small but we work hard together," said Shockley. “We clean the the area inside every chance we get. We are fixing hot box meals, pizza and grill carry-out orders. We can deliver the food outside to you, as an option for your convenience.”
Trojan P.Q. Mart is offering free lunches from their hotbox Monday through Friday, free of charge, for any students needing food while they are out of school. They are located 112 S. Old Wire Rd, in Washburn. They are open Monday through Friday 5 a.m. - 10 p.m.
