Local high school students attend FCCLA Leadership Training
November 27, 2019
Students from Purdy High School attended the 2019 Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Fall Leadership Conference, October 27-28, at Tan-Tar-A Conference Center, Osage Beach. Approximately 1,000 FCCLA members, advisers, and chaperones attended the conference.
The following Purdy FCCLA members attended the conference: Soledad Salas, daughter of Jose and Thomas Salas; Ximena Aldava, daughter of Rufino and Patricia Aldava; Daniel Aldava, son of Rufino and Patricia Aldava; Jasmine Holloway, daughter of Jamie and Amanda Holloway; and Jessica Garcia, daughter of Ezequiel and Maria Garcia. Local chapter adviser Amy Harkey also attended.
FCCLA students were able to choose from a variety of different sessions. Sunday included a general session and a keynote by Erica Prosser, Director for Training Services for TRI Leadership. Sunday evening and Monday sessions included trainings in leadership, FCCLA programing and a variety of other topics. Trainings were performed by Missouri FCCLA State Officers and TRI Leadership. Members were inspired to help others and be a positive leader. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a tailgating event to help raise money and supplies for the state service project, The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri. This event allowed the state organization to donate 1,156 pounds of supplies and $511 to the service project. The money will allow the food bank to have over $10,000 in purchasing power for their service area.
Under the guidance of new chapter adviser Amy Harkey and a dedicated officer team, membership in Purdy’s chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America has increased from 19 to 62 students in grades eight through twelve. Upcoming chapter events include a Car Seat Safety Check, a Senior Citizens’ Christmas Dinner and a Family and Consumer Sciences Dine In Day, where the chapter will challenge all Purdy Eagle families to have a meal at home with their families.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in FCCLA programs and activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities. For more information, visit the FCCLA website at www.mofccla.org.
