Memories Car Cruise set for June 10

One Friday evening not too long ago, Jason Blankenship stopped by FastTrip in Cassville for a quick sandwich on his way home and noticed how dead the town was for a weekend night. Blankenship said he couldn't quit thinking about how much fun it was to cruise Main Street back in the day. The thought lingered through the night, and he decided the next day he would try to sponsor a community car cruise.
"It was what we did back then. We would cruise Main and meet up with friends on Friday and Saturday nights," said Blankenship.
"I decided to make a Facebook page and see if anyone was interested. I couldn't believe how many comments I received. People were talking about the good old days, and I knew that it was something I wanted to do, and I also wanted to raise money for the school backpack program."
According to Blankenship, the old cruise route started at the square downtown, and cruisers would usually span a stretch of Main Street down to the Sonic Drive-In and sometimes farther to the Pizza Hut parking lot.
The event will be held on Saturday, June 10, beginning at 7 p.m. and coincide with the Cassville Cruisers monthly meet at the Barry County Museum parking lot, which starts at 5 p.m.
Blankenship will collect donations for the backpack program throughout the event and hand out 1st Annual Memories Car Cruise stickers with each donation. He won't be hard to find in his green Shrek Jeep. He plans to be downtown or in the lot next to The Ole Home Place on Main Street.
Some local business plan to join in on the trip down memory lane. Fastrip will bring back the Wildcat sandwich for only $1.99. Freedom Bank will have a tent in their parking lot, and Robert and Sheila Wolf, past owners of the Sonic Drive-In, is bringing back the memories of The Twilight Zone Arcade behind Sonic. Chad Yarnall, with Farm Bureau Insurance, and Blankenship's company, BA Printworks, donated the stickers for the fundraising event.
For more information on the event or if your business would like to participate, contact Jason Blankenship at 417-342-0694. Follow the events Facebook page: 1st Annual Memories Car Cruise, for updates.
Blankenship plans to hold the fundraising event annually on the second Saturday on June with a different organization or charity receiving the funds raised.
