Jekyll and Hyde.
As hot as Southwest shooters were in their district win against Diamond, the Trojans came out ice cold in their Class 3 District 12 semifinal at Miller on Thursday night. On the short end of a disastrous 27-7 first half, Southwest could not recover from the huge deficit.
Joel Kleeman and Brendan Thom combined to score 40 of Miller’s 50 points. Southwest came alive late, hitting seven treys in the second half. The Trojans outscored the Cardinals 33-23 in that half, but it wasn’t enough.
Southwest finished the season with a 10-12 record.
“We executed pretty well on the defensive end but couldn’t find our rhythm on offense,” said Southwest’s Rusty Roe after the game.
“It was a tough end to a good season,” Roe continued. “With covid and the winter storm, we really got hit hard. I think our guys did a great job working through that adversity.”
Southwest had no seniors on the roster, and started freshman Brendyn Paulsen at center. The Trojans fully expect to contend for a district title next year.
Miller scorers: Joel Kleeman, 23; Brendan Thom, 17; Logan Nield, 4; Jeffrey Lung, 3; Kaleb Groesbeck, 3.
Southwest scorers: Caden Uthe, 10; Zak Starr, 10; Cruz Marquez, 9; Brendyn Paulsen, 5; Zak Corwin, 4; Lucas Paulsen, 2.
