Missouri is celebrating its 200th birthday Tuesday, August 10. In commemoration, municipalities and counties across Missouri are hosting ice cream socials.
Barry County officials are opting to join the celebration. They will serve ice cream to interested partakers on the south lawn of the courthouse in Cassville, from 2 - 4 p.m. on August 10.
Barry County Clerk Joyce Ennis says bring your lawn chairs and visit, weather-permitting.
“We have no idea how many people to plan for,” she said, “but we have 500 individual-sized serving cups ready to fill with ice cream.”
Southwest Research Center to host open house/ice cream social August 10
The Southwest Research Center at 14548 State Rd. H, Mt Vernon, will host an open house Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 1 - 3 p.m.
The event will kick-off at 1 p.m. with a brief welcome from Reagan Bluel, Interim Superintendent. Tiger Stripe ice cream scoops will celebrate the Missouri Bicentennial following the welcome.
“We want to get folks more familiar with and excited about our land grant mission. We want to take this opportunity to showcase what we do every day and how we are serving the state, to our regional stakeholders in agriculture and beyond,” Bluel stated.
A brief walking tour of the horticulture and cattle research, given by Andrew Thomas and Reagan Bluel, will follow the ice cream social. The tour will highlight numerous research projects underway at the Center, including tomatoes, elderberries, black walnuts, a prairie restoration demo, and backgrounding steers.
In addition to the open house, focused events will take place at the Center throughout the fall. Each event will feature a different agricultural topic. More information on these events will be coming soon.
The Southwest Research Center is one of the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources’ Agricultural Experiment Stations. The Center is near Mount Vernon, Mo. For more information about the open house, call Reagan Bluel at 417-466-2148 or email BluelRJ@missouri.edu.
