New county engagement specialist in nutrition, health education

Barry County welcomed a new member to the University of Missouri Extension faculty. Eden Stewart joined the Barry County Extension office as of April 1 as the county's engagement specialist in nutrition and health education. Stewart worked within McDonald County as a Nutrition Program Associate for the past four years as she earned her master’s degree.
Stewart said, “I had the pleasure to teach kids and adults basic nutrition information; however, I wanted to make a make a broader impact by expanding basic nutrition which I could not do in my former position.”
Eden is looking forward to teaching classes within her three counties of responsibilities (Barry, McDonald and Newton) and teaching healthy life skills to all. She expressed excitement as she spoke of possible classes in the future, such as: managing chronic diseases, cooking matters grocery store tours, along with canning and food preservation. Furthermore, she expressed a passion for fresh foods by speaking of a link to gardening and growing food by stating, “I just love fresh produce and think once people have an understanding in ways to grow, use, and to preserve it, they too will have a passion for it.”
From starting a farmers market in Manito, Ill., to working with students in school gardens in Fayetteville, Ark., her passion bloomed. She looks forward to helping her communities to grow and become healthier. She said, “We all want the same things in life: to have healthy, happy families and communities.”
