Like many local churches, OK Assembly of God, in rural Washburn, has been faced with hardships caused by COVID-19, says member Angela Long.
“We had to shut our church doors on two different occasions (during the pandemic),” she said. “One particularly difficult struggle has been our lack of a pastor since August of 2020.”
According to Long, that struggle has come to an end.
“We are so excited,” she said, “to welcome Pastors Charles and Vicky Taff to our congregation.”
The Taffs have spent the past 40 years in the ministry together.
“For the past 12 or 13 years,” Pastor Charles Taff said, “we headed up Victory House, a Teen Challenge drug and alcohol rehabilitation ministry for teenage girls that we started in Brewster, Kansas.
“My wife has always had a heart for teen girls,” he continued. “The story’s kind of funny. She’d followed my leading for the first years of our ministry, then I said, ‘We’re gonna make a change; you’ve always followed me, now I’ll follow you.’ That’s how Victory House was started.”
After their daughter was diagnosed with cancer, the couple moved back to their home town of Steelville, Missouri, to be near her before she passed away December 2 of last year.
In addition to their daughter, the couple has a son who resides in the Springfield area, but no grandchildren.
“We’re too young for grandkids anyway,” Pastor Charles, who’s in his mid-60s, laughs.
Pastor Charles said he and Vicky are excited to see what the future holds at OK Assembly of God.
“I’d been filling in as pastor for about a month,” he said, “and was officially voted in on November 1.”
The Taffs are currently living in Cassville after recently relocating from Springfield.
OK Assembly of God is located at 5895 State Hwy. 90, Washburn.
Service times:
• Sunday School, 10 a.m.; worship service 11 a.m.; evening service, 6 p.m.
• Wednesday evening service, 7 p.m.
