Barry County Health Department administrator, Roger Brock, reports that Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children ages five through 11 are expected to be available at the health department sometime next week.
The dose for children within that age group is one-third of the dose contained in the vaccination for adults and will be administered in a series of two doses, three weeks apart.
The Pfizer vaccine was previously authorized by the FDA to be administered to individuals age 12 and older.
According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), boosters vaccines are recommended for adults who received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID vaccines, six months or more ago.
For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their initial series:
• 65 years and older
• Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings
• Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
• Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings
For those who got the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are also recommended by the DHSS for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.
Roger Brock advises residents to contact the health department at 417-847-2114 to check for vaccine availability.
