Purdy Eagles claim District Championship

The Purdy Eagles continued their improbable postseason run on Friday, edging top-seeded Thomas Jefferson in the Class 2 District 12 championship game, 47-45. The Purdy win punctuated an exciting week of basketball at Webb City’s Cardinal Dome.
Class 2 District 12
Jasper Lady Eagles 59, Purdy Lady Eagles 49
After blowing a double digit lead and trailing late by 45-40, the Jasper Lady Eagles finished with a 19-4 run to defeat the Purdy Lady Eagles, 59-49, in a Class 2 District 12 semifinal at Webb City on Wednesday. Kristy Holliday led Jasper with 24 points. Kinsley Mattingley topped Wheaton scorers with 13.
College Heights Lady Cougars 62, Verona Lady Wildcats 24
The College Heights Lady Cougars beat Verona in the other girls semifinal, 62-24. Grace Bishop scored 25 for College Heights and Klohe Burk added 21.
Thomas Jefferson 68, Wheaton 56
On the boys side, Thomas Jefferson downed Wheaton, 68-56.
The Cavaliers doubled up the Bulldogs in the first half, 42-21. Wheaton opened the third quarter with an 8-0 burst, but TJ regained control and led 51-35 at the final break.
Wheaton had a late surge to pull within 63-56 on a Kelton Park trey, but TJ held on to take the victory.
Thomas Jefferson’s Dylan Dean-Heck led all scorers with 19. Jack Mitchell scored 17 to lead Wheaton.
Purdy 49, College Heights 42
The College Heights Cougars stormed to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter. Purdy struggled to score, and Osiel Aldava picked up two fouls in that quarter.
But the Eagles came alive in the second stanza, raining threes to take a 27-22 lead. The Cougars scored the final four points of the half, but Purdy still held a 27-26 advantage thanks to 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range.
In the third quarter, Purdy pulled away from a cold shooting College Heights team. The Eagles led 42-30 after three quarters, with 8 treys to their credit versus none for the Cougars.
In the final quarter, the College Heights pressure gave the Cougars a chance. Purdy could not convert free throws, and a spate of turnovers led to the Cougars pulling within 45-40 at the 1:20 mark.
Then, Purdy’s Jacob Brown buried free throws for a 47-40 lead with 38 seconds left, and Aldava added two more in the final 15 seconds to secure the 49-42 victory for Purdy.
Aldava led all scorers with 18. Conner Burton paced College Heights with 11.
With the win, the Eagles advanced to the district title game against Thomas Jefferson on Friday.
Purdy 47, Thomas Jefferson 45
In that title tilt, Purdy stormed to an early 9-2 lead, led 30-18 at one point, and then held on for a monumental 47-45 upset of Thomas Jefferson. The Cavaliers tied the game in the closing minute at 45-45 before Asiel Aldava found a loose ball in the lane and scored.
Then Purdy held in a tense ending. Scotty Henry blocked a potential tying layup, and Jake Brown’s defense forced a missed trey from Brock Conklin as the clock ran out.
Aldava led Purdy’s championship win with 17 points.
Scotty Henry, the seven-foot center, dominated the paint against Thomas Jefferson. Henry scored 13 points - 11 of them in the second half. He dunked, He blocked 6 Cavalier shots, and he raked in 10 rebounds.
The Eagles, 15-12 after sweeping Southwest, College Heights, and Thomas Jefferson, moved on to face District 11 champ, Greenwood, in a Wednesday sectional contest at Carthage.
