Purdy FCCLA members return to District Star Events
March 11, 2020
After a six year absence, members of the Purdy Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) returned to the District Star Events competition on January 30. Jomelin Alvarez (left) and Katrina Lee (center) competed in the National Programs, Families First event category. The pair earned silver medals. Alvarez and Lee chose the "Dine-In" project sponsored by American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). They sent fliers home with Elementary students and announced it during their weekly PBIS meeting on November 20. They encouraged students to participate in a meal on Tuesday, December 3, for the National "Dine-In"" day, requesting photos from families who had a meal together. The Purdy FCCLA chapter was nationally recognized by AAFCS for committing to participate and received a cookbook- Eat, Laugh,Talk: The Family Dinner Playbook.
Makayla Mazza (right) participated in the Focus on Children Star Event. She won a gold medal in her division and will represent Purdy Schools at the State Star Events competition in March. For her project, Mazza identified a concern with the safety of children in carseats: the placement of, size qualifications, and overall education of parents on car seat safety. She partnered with Cox Health Systems and the Purdy Fire Department to hold an event where parents could have their car seats checked by Car Seat Technicians from Cox Monett. This event was held on November 22 at the Purdy Fire Department. Overall, there were 13 car seats checked: 12 were installed incorrectly, and two were inaccurate for the size of child. Cox Monett gave complimentary car seats to these two families.
The Purdy FCCLA chapter operates under the guidance of adviser Amy Harkey.
