Free carnival and pony rides are a big hit with kids at the Purdy Festival, now gearing up for its 10th season on July 17.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 17, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., the day the annual Purdy Festival will bring a whirlwind of family fun to town for the 10th year. This year’s line-up includes a couple of crowd-pleasing new features, says festival organizer, Renae Neill.
"First, we're having a real petting zoo, this year," Neill said, “one where the little animals are tame and children can go into their pens and feed them.”
Friendly Farms Mobile Petting Zoo, according to its website, promises to bring a farm animal experience to the festival, and will include goats, chickens, ducks, pot belly pigs and plenty of bunnies - as well as food for children to provide them with.
Another exciting addition to the festival will be a pair of monster trucks driven in by Wheels of Freedom, based in Wentworth. Rides in the trucks will be available for $10 each, according to car show organizer, Austin Drake.
Drake says Cliff Starbird, recently inducted into International Monster Truck Hall of Fame, has also committed to putting in an appearance with his monster truck, Frankenstein.
Aside from monster trucks, Drake is expecting another good turnout for this year’s car show, which will begin about 8 a.m. and continue through 3 p.m.
“Last year, we had 75 entries in the show,” Drake said, “up from the 25 when we first started the show 10 years ago.”
According to Drake, there is a $20 registration fee to enter any type of vehicle, and prizes donated by area businesses - including Redshaw Auto Supply and The Corner Store - will be awarded in various categories. All proceeds will be directed toward future Purdy Festival Car Shows, where music is a star attraction.
Drake says last year’s popular musicians, the Eddie Valen Band and Brian Lee Dunning, are scheduled to put in another appearance.
“We’re planning to have the valve cover races again this year, too,” Drake said. “Then, at noon, we’ll play the national anthem, followed by a salute to area veterans.”
The car show will take place around Purdy’s newest park where the rock fountain is located.
In addition to car show activities, the Purdy Festival will again feature favorite attractions from years past, including free children's rides and inflatables, a craft and vendor show, 4-H project exhibits and the ever-exciting bathtub races.
