The Purdy High School Spanish Club hosted the Ozarks Hispanic Studies League Competition at Purdy High School on Saturday, December 2. Purdy students and dance partners Emma Montoya and Chris Montoya placed fourth in Advanced Latin Dance, and Faith Montoya and her partner, Austin Gibson, placed fourth in Beginners Latin Dance. The Purdy Culture Bowl team placed fifth. Team members include Jasmine Canales, Jed Wimsatt, Yeimy Pastor and Frances Mathews. Yeimy Pastor placed fifth in the singing competition, and Purdy Schools placed third in overall points. Purdy High School Spanish Club Adviser Deborah Lay noted of the event and her competitors, “It is my great privilege to work with the Purdy High School Spanish Club. They are an outstanding group of students, who represented Purdy High School with high standards and great work effort. The students who competed worked very hard for months to prepare. The dance students had to learn four dances: the Cumbia, Australian Tango, Salsa and Merengue. The culture club had to know facts about South and Central America. They represented us well and put us in 3rd place in overall points. They are a great bunch of hardworking students.” Purdy’s winning dance competitors are pictured from left: Emma Montoya and her partner, Chris Montoya, and Faith Montoya and her partner, Austin Gibson.
