For the second time this year, Roaring River State Park is preparing for an influx of small fishers looking for big catches at the fall Kids’ Fishing Day. The ever-popular day that allows children to fish for free will be this Saturday, August 16.
Paul Spurgeon, Roaring River Hatchery manager, said that the staff is stocking the waters with around 3,000 trout. Of that total, 100 will be tagged for special prizes and 50 are lunkers.
Like each Kids’ Fishing Day, there is more to do for youngsters and adults alike other than fishing. From 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. different classes will be offered for kids wanting to learn how to shoot a bow, learn to fly fish, and much more. Classes include some favorites, like Dutch oven cooking with Dr. Larry Quinalty, air rifle shooting, snakes alive, and hatchery tours. This day will also feature some new learning opportunities from the Eagle Rock-Golden-Mano Fire Department, learning about Smokey the Bear and more. The day is sure to bring activities for children (and adults) of all walks of life.
Kids under 15 fish for free all day on Saturday. Tags will be available all day on Friday at the Hatchery and at the information tent beginning at 6:30 a.m. Adults are not allowed to fish on Saturday during designated areas unless they are helping a child, but the child must help reel in any catches. The park is still seeking volunteers who would like to help. It takes around 199 volunteers at each Kids’ Fishing Day. To volunteer or for more information, call the Hatchery at (417) 847-2430. Volunteers can also show up the day of the event and sign up at the information tent.
