The Seneca Indians jumped out to a big early lead and then Zach Cox tossed a one-run gem in handing the host Cassville Wildcats a 14-1 loss in Tuesday night action of the Cassville Baseball Classic Tournament. Cox struck out five Wildcats, and only allowed the one run on two hits, a walk, and three errors in four innings of work. Titus Atkins came on in relief in the fifth inning and faced just three batters as Seneca closed out the run-rule shortened game.
Seven runs. That was the story of the first inning and Seneca’s first at bat. Cassville’s Jarrod Wallace could not solve the Seneca lineup, and was lifted in the second frame. Kole Faber inherited a two out, two on situation, and coaxed a 6-3 ground out from Austin Furgerson to get the Cats out of the inning with just an 8-0 deficit.
Faber blanked the Indians in the top of the third, and then Cassville scratched a run across when BOwen Preddy led off the home half of the third with a double and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Carson Roller.
But Seneca ripped Faber and then Camden Roller in the fourth inning for six more runs to build a 14-1 lead.
The Wildcats could not sustain any offense in this game, with mostly just a frustrating collection of long foul balls to show for some promising contact.
Give Seneca credit. The Indians pitched, fielded, and hit to a level any coach would welcome this early in the season.
The Wildcats slipped to 1-2 after losing their opener at East Newton, 9-7, on Friday night but opened tournament play with a 3-1 win over Galena on Monday night. Cassville will conclude tournament action on Thursday with a contest against Omaha.
