Patrons and staff at Shell Knob Library recently took a look into the past when they opened a time capsule from 1999. The library was filled with excitement and several residents, kids and staff members on February 19 as they watched former librarian Regina McIlrath unseal and open the capsule.
McIlrath is a long time resident of Shell Knob and was the library manager when the time capsule was made. She had asked several students from the Shell Knob School, ages five to 12, to gather the contents for their time capsule they would be opened 20 years later. McIlrath asked the students to attach a small piece of paper to each submitted item with their name and an explanation of why they put the item in the time capsule.
There were dozens of items revealed, each of which represented what each child thought would best represent their life back in 1999. Many wrote a brief description of how they thought people would view the item in the future. Some of the items in the time capsule included toys, a Shell Knob Chargers shirt, a cookbook from Carole’s Restaurant, a signed card from Russell’s Variety Store with item prices from 1999, and the November 17, 1999, issue of The Rattler newspaper. The capsule also contained Beanie Babies, a Hot Wheels car, and several state quarters since 1999 was the year individual states had representation on quarters. There were lots of smiles from the people who felt the nostalgia for the items that were in the capsule as they brought back memories.
All the items were revealed will be on display at the Shell Knob Library for a few weeks. Anyone who participated in the original capsule is welcome to contact the Shell Knob Library to retrieve the items they placed inside the container in 1999. The capsule revealed how fast time passes. Some things changed, and some things stayed the same. The Shell Knob Library took a brief look into the past and provided a glance at what remains important to the community.
To see the time capsule contents, stop by the Shell Knob Library. They are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. They are located at 24931 State Hwy. 39.
