Shell Knob’s Michael Bernsen earns Eagle Scout rank

July 11, 2018
Michael Bernsen, of Shell Knob, was presented with the highly respected rank of Eagle Scout at a special Court of Honor at Central Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 30.
As a member of Boy Scout Troop 38 of Monett, Michael worked for years to attain the honor. Surrounded by his family, friends and fellow scouts, Michael’s achievements were reviewed, leading to his acceptance as an Eagle Scout, the highest advancement in Boy Scouting.
The formal ceremony was led by Michael’s former Scoutmaster Max Akers, of Troop 185 in Cassville. Michael met all challenges presented by his fellow scouts, including: Quixote Gautney-Lopez, Life Scout; his father, Jerry Bernsen, Life Scout; his brother, Casey Bernsen, Eagle Scout; and Anthony Funk and Justin and Casey Christiansen, Eagle Scouts.
Michael’s many scouting accomplishments were reviewed, including earning 33 merit badges, serving several leadership positions within his troop, most recently as Senior Patrol Leader, Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow, and earning the Medal of Merit for meritorious service above and beyond expectation.
As his Eagle project, Michael planned and coordinated the building of a Meditation Trail at the Methodist Church in Shell Knob, encompassing a total of 311 man hours.
Following his receipt of Eagle Scout rank, Michael presented Mentor Pins to those who had supported and helped him along the path to this prestigious award: his father, Jerry; his mother, Kathy; his brother, Casey; his grandfather, Bill Garcia; Scoutmasters Max Akers and Jon Funk; and Asst. Scoutmaster Laura Funk.
Special commemorative plaques from the Missouri House and Missouri Senate were personally presented by Representative Scott Fitzpatrick and Senator David Sater.
Following the Eagle Scout ceremony, a meal was served and invited guests took the opportunity to congratulate Michael Bernsen and his family on attaining this honorable achievement.
