Barry County’s current Sheriff Mick Epperly formally endorsed Republican candidate Terry Meek as his replacement in 2017. He said, “I’ve had a lot of people coming to me asking me if I was going to endorse someone and who I thought it should be. I wanted to listen to the candidates and listen to their views on things, and I believe Terry is the man for the job.”
Meek currently works in the Sheriff’s Department, but he is not the only member of the department running.
Epperly said, “I’ve always been concerned for the county and law enforcement, and I want the public to continue to get good service or maybe better service as far as protecting citizens. Terry has new ideas that he’ll put in place.”
Meek said he was humbled by Epperly’s endorsement. He said, “I was pretty thrilled when he called and let me know about it. I feel honored that he trusted this task to me.”
Some of the other officers with the department are supporting Meek, as well, citing his willingness to help with reports and offer his experience when they need it. When asked about that, Meek said, “I enjoy helping the guys when they come to me with a problem or need help with paper work. I’ve showed them some of the things I’ve done in the past and how I’ve done things and hopefully made things a little easier for them.”
Epperly said, “Terry is good with helping officers that are new in the department and I think he could be an inspiration to young officers.”
He added, “With a situation like this, it’s down to almost the election, and I wanted these guys to run and be on their own about that. But as time has gone on, while I feel we’ve got some good candidates, no doubt, I do feel Terry has been very honest with me and very loyal. He is a detective here and has worked himself through the ranks. He’s a good Christian man, been with our SWAT team ever since we’ve had a SWAT team and I believe he could just step right in and continue on with the administration here.
“He knows the ins and outs of the Sheriff’s office, and I feel like I could put my trust in him wholeheartedly. That’s why I’m putting my endorsement into him.”
Meek faces candidates Travis Hilburn, Danny Boyd, James Smith, Justin Fohn, and Gary Davis in the August 2 Primary Election. Whoever wins the primary faces Democrat candidate Justin “Dave” Ruark in the November General Election.
