Wheaton Chief of Police Clint Danforth and Officer Cody Stephens held a benefit softball tournament last weekend at the Wheaton School Ball Fields for student Garrett Roller. In October of last year, Garrett broke both bones in his leg in a UTV crash and has been undergoing treatment at Children's Hospital in Kansas City.
"We never imagined eight months later we would still be doing this," said Angie Roller, Garrett's mother. Garrett's father, Eric, added, "In April, doctors placed an external fixator on his leg that they plan to remove in August. If the bones are not healed, he may need a bone graft."
"We had twelve teams participate at the benefit and raised close to $7,000," said Chief Danforth. "We want to thank everybody for their support for this great cause, starting with the BBQ Station in Cassville, Wheaton Fastrip, Wal-Mart and Casey's in Cassville, Lowe's in Monett, DND Tire in Wheaton and anyone else that made a donations for this great benefit."
"Again," Danforth added, "we can't express enough how grateful we are for this community to come together for this great cause and raise this amount of money for this young man. We are very grateful and so is the family."
