Southwest guns down Wheaton

January 13, 2021
Lee Stubblefield
The pedigreed trap team isn’t the only hot shooting squad at Southwest. The Trojans broke from the gate with a 7-2 lead and never let up while claiming a 63-41 victory at Wheaton on Thursday night. Cruz Marquez led Southwest scorers with 18, and Caden Uthe added 14. Zac Leverich reached double digits for the Bulldogs, scoring 14.
Southwest, known for three point shooting, eschewed the long ball for the most part and piled up points attacking the basket. The Trojans scored only three times from beyond the arc.
The 22-point runaway was not the game fans expected after the Trojans squeezed past the Bulldogs at the Southwest Holiday Tournament. Earlier in the week, Southwest defeated Pierce City, 75-63.
Varsity boys roundup
• Wildcats struggle, Wheaton wins.
The Cassville Wildcats suffered a tough home loss to Reeds Spring on Tuesday night, 45-40. The Wildcats then travelled to Wheaton on Friday, where the Bulldogs posted a 50-40 victory. Chad Meyer poured in 17 points to lead Class 2 Wheaton to the win over Class 4 Cassville.
Wheaton improved to 5-8 with the win, after falling to one-loss Thomas Jefferson and Southwest earlier in the week. Cassville slipped to 1-8. After losing to Purdy and Wheaton already, The Wildcats look to avoid the Barry County trifecta when they host Southwest on Friday night.
• Lamar drops Purdy in OT.
The Purdy Eagles challenged the Big 8’s Lamar Tigers on Thursday, falling in overtime, 61-52. Lamar improved to 7-4 with the win, while Purdy slipped to 8-4.
• Exeter Tigers fall to College Heights.
The Exeter Tigers fell to College Heights on Thursday night, 69-60. The Tigers play in the Pleasant Hope Tournament this week. Despite the winless record, the Tigers have competed well and are due for a win. Fans will remember that this January 19 is the 15th anniversary of the end of “The Streak”, the 182-game losing streak that stretched over nine seasons.
